Tabriz

In northwest Iran near the Turkish border lies Tabriz. Once the capital of Armenia it is now one of the biggest cities of Iran. The population of Tabriz consists for a large part of Azeri Turks.

Sights include the the ruined 14th-century Ali Shah Mosque, the 13th-century Blue Mosque and the Friday Mosque. The Bazar is also worth a few hours of your time.

Daytrips can be made to Ardabil where you find the Shaikh Safi Tomb and to salt water Lake Urmia just west of Tabriz. Candowan and El-Goli are also nice trips.
