Tajikistan Kidnappings, downtown shootings, poverty and desperation are the rather unpleasant features of the daily routine in Tajikistan. This beleaguered Central Asian country tries in vain to attempt full sovereignity. Despite a few symbols like its own flag, a national airline and a scattering of embassies abroad, it remains a curiously incomplete and terribly troubled country. Tajikistan was by far the most artificial and ill-equipped of the five Soviet-modelled Central Asian republics, and it bloodily fell apart as soon as it was free of direct rule from Moscow. The country was embroiled in a bloody civil war from 1992 to 1997 after independence gave way to clan-based rivalries. Somewhere between 20,000 and 50,000 people have lost their lives and there are half a million refugees. Although a peace agreement was signed in June 1997, tension is high especially at the Afghan border region.
