Central Asia

Central Asia consists of the seven countries, all of which are landlocked. Five are Soviet Union republics: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Tajikstan. Afghanistan and Mongolia kept their indepenence although both have had a (short) period of Communist rule.

With the exeption of Mongolia all of these countries are predominanlty muslim. Mongolia is one of the few Buddhist countries in the world.

Herding has been a key element in the lifesyles of all the people of Central Asia. The traditional Yurt (nomadic tent) can be still be seen even in big cities.
