Sossusvlei

Sossusvlei

THE highlight of any Namibia trip! Though quite remote, going to Nambia and missing Sossusvlei would be like going to the Czech Republic and missing Prague. It is worth staying at the Sesriem campsite within the park, as it is the only location which will allow you to be close enough to access the dunes at sunrise and sunset, the ideal time to view the amazing change of colors. The world´s highest sand dunes are located 60km from the camp, along a paved but worn road. The drive takes one hour. Be up before sunrise and ready to depart the gates as soon as they open. Beware of large animals that roam the plain. Though rare, they do like to stand on the asphalt.

There is a parking lot at the end and from there, one has immediate foot access to many amazing dunes. However, the largest dune is a bit more difficult to reach. There are 4x4 taxis which take you the last 5 km to it, but at N$80 per person, they are more than a rip-off. Refuse to take these and walk over to nearby Hiddenvlei instead!
