Dakhla ed-Dakhla used to be Villa Cisneros and was a Spanish adminastrice center for the Rio de Oro. Why they called this piece of land River of Gold is quite unclear unless they meant the color of the Sand. Since the Spaniards left this city has had quite the same fate as the rest of the Western Sahara.
