Grand Bassam

From 1893 to 1899 Grand Bassam was the capital of the French colonial power in Cote d'Ivoire. They left in a hurry because of a yellow fevere epidemy and moved to Bingerville.

The old adminstrative town on an island in the lagoon is one of the best daytrips to make from Abidjan only 40 km to the West.

The Governor's House, the Mairie are in good shape. The old Palais de Justice, the old Post Office and the custom houses are in a bad state. Besides the old colonial buildings the main attraction is the superb beach.

For even better beaches contine some more 40 km to Assini where you find the best beaches of the country.
